Old Retaining Walls: A Problem Hidden in Plain Sight on Housing Estates

If your home sits on a housing estate built in the 80s or 90s, there is a good chance the retaining walls holding your yard in place were built to minimum standards, or no real standard at all. Treated pine was a common go-to back then. Decades of Central Coast weather, pest damage, waterlogged soil and heavy rainfall have not been kind to it.

It is not just an eyesore. A failing retaining wall is a genuine safety risk. Waterlogged ground is incredibly heavy, and when a wall gives way it can do so suddenly and with force. For our clients in Bonnels Bay, that risk was very real. The existing wall was deteriorating to the point where collapse was a matter of when, not if, bringing with it the threat of physical harm, flooding and significant repair costs.

Our team at Cascade Building tackled the job properly. Steel posts were set at the right depth to handle the load, paired with beautiful fibre-reinforced polymer sleepers that will outlast anything the weather throws at them. Drainage was improved at the same time to make sure future downpours are redirected safely away from the property.

Every retaining wall we build meets current engineering standards, covering drainage compliance, post depth and material selection. The result is a wall that is structurally sound, looks great and gives homeowners genuine peace of mind for decades to come.

If your retaining wall is looking tired or you are not sure it is still doing its job, get in touch with us for an assessment.
